Your responsibilities:

The Sr. Director, R&D & Innovation, reporting to the Vice President, Technical & Product Management, will be responsible for driving inclusive thought leadership and innovative creativity across all Metal Processing, Industrial, Specialties, OEM/Automotive Fluid and Grease R&D activities for North America.  This strategically important leadership role will have direct accountability over a diverse, technical team of 5-7 chemists and scientists; indrectly leading a team of over 50 team members.  This successful leader will be empowered with the responsibilty for delivering the following:

  • Participate as an acting member of, and contributor to, the Regional Technical and Product Management Leadership team.
  • Drive, develop and provide managerial oversight of new product and process development activities across all regional business divisions through the stage-gate product development request (PDR) platform. Allocate and direct adequate resources for global projects requiring regional contributions.
  • Ensure alignment and stewardship of project portfolio with goals and expectations from product management, business segments, sales and other key internal stakeholders.  Communicate key performance metrics. 
  • Strongly influence Americas regional innovation narrative through ownership, execution and agile refinement of the Fuchs2025 R&D Technical Roadmap
  • Accelerate integration of digital methods within R&D, further capturing the innovation spirit while increasing and evolving our modern approach to product development activities
  • Through global cross-functional collaboration with Regional Hubs within Fuchs technical community, serve as key technology and innovation ambassador in supporting and driving key Fuchs2025 technical initiatives at the regional level. 
  • Depending on experiences and skillset, participate as an acting member in select global Key Working Groups (KWGs) across the Fuchs business to further support R&D, product development, launch, and on-going success of product pipeline.
  • As a motivational leader, through sharing of knowledge and experience, inspire research groups in bringing forth a new wave of ideas and concepts (i.e. an ideation ecosystem) that have the potential of profoundly impacting our business over the medium & long-term.
  • Collaborate cross functionally to support the company’s profitability though its sales, manufacturing, marketing, product development, and general management functions.
  • Champion technical considerations and efforts in the areas of product and raw material complexity impacting Product Management, Procurement and Supply Chain
  • Interact with customers to demonstrate the company’s commitment to technical excellence and customer intimacy in order to maintain a compeitive advantage in the markets Fuchs serves.
  • Through affilations and consortia participations, keep abreast of industry trends to further to align R&D priorities with business goals.
  • Foster a collaborative, high performance work environment focused on continuous improvement while promoting a culture of coaching, mentorship and continuous learning.
  • Lead by example by demonstrating Fuchs’s core values every day, i.e., trust, creating value, respect, reliability, and integrity.
  • Aligning with our Fuchs2025 goals, collaborate with regional HR partners to build effective succession plans through developing, attracting and retaining talent within RD&I group
  • Effectively manage budgets and allocate resources to achieve both short term and long term goals, including capital expenditures to increase company’s R&D capabilities and capacities.

 

 

Qualifications we are looking for:

  • MS in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related techinal field required, Ph. D. preferred.
  • 7-10 years of progressive leadership experience with demonstrated performance of collaborative team development across cross-functional teams in a matrix regional/global organization
  • Experience in the conceptualization, generation and implementation of tactical and strategic planning
  • Strong technical, product development and project management knowledge and experiences from within any of the Industrial, Specialty and/or Transportation lubricants or specialty chemicals sector.
  • Strong communication, presentation and leadership skills with an ability to effectively connect with team members across different groups with different disciplines and varying degrees of skillsets. 
  • Demonstrated success in strategic planning, and resource management with an aptitude for making sound group decisions    
  • Ability to demonstrate a disciplined, at times creative, approach to problem solving, project triage, and stage/gate processing.
